Blackjack is one of the most popular card games in land-based casinos and can also be played in online casinos. No one knows exactly in the history of gambling when and where blackjack appeared exactly – it is believed that the foundations of this game were based in the French card game “vingt-et-un” (“twenty-one”), and blackjack itself was formed in Italy in XIX century. Now both classic blackjack and blackjack with various variations and additions are available for playing in the casino.

Game Rules and Terminology
The rules of blackjack are simple. However, you need to know the terms used in the game.
The goal of the game is to beat the dealer by collecting more points than him, but not exceeding 21. It is possible to instantly get 21 (cards A and 10) – This is the situation considered a blackjack. If you score 21 points already during the game, this is not a blackjack, but 21.
Decks used
It indicates the number of decks used to play this blackjack.
The game is played against the dealer who deals cards. Depending on the variation of blackjack in the game, from 1 to 8 decks can be used. The more decks used, the lower the probability of a blackjack combination, so the casino advantage increases as the number of decks participating in the game increases. If the game occurs with 1 deck, then it is shuffled after each game. If the game uses many decks, then the decks are mixed in a shuffle machine, and the dealer installs a card in the deck on his own – a shoe, about a third of the deck. When the game comes to a shoe – the cards are shuffled.
Card Denominations
Cards retain the following values on points: from 2 to 10 – at face value, for pictures (joker, queen, king) – 10, for ace 1 or 11 (11 so far the total amount is not more than 21, then 1).
During the initial distribution, the player is given 2 cards, the dealer also takes 2 cards, but hides 1. Then you decide whether to take more cards (Hit button) or enough (Stand button).
Dealer must hit soft 17
If the dealer starts to draw cards for himself, he must collect them until his value is 17 or more. After that, it becomes clear who won.
Blackjack
Blackjack – receiving A and 10 at the initial distribution of cards by the dealer, which in total gives 21 and instant win or draw.
Blackjack pays 3 to 2
Blackjack pays 3 to 2 – with blackjack, you get a win in the amount of x1.5 of your bet. For example, you bet $50, the dealer dealt cards and you got blackjack – in this case, your winnings will be $75 instead of the standard $50 (1 to 1) if you won simply by defeating the dealer.
Insurance
Insurance – blackjack insurance. If the dealer got 10 or A during the initial distribution, then there is a possibility that he has a blackjack.
At 10, he will immediately check if he has a blackjack and if so, he will collect the losing bets.
With A, you can make an additional insurance bet, and in the case of a dealer blackjack, stay with your money by drawing this game. If the dealer does not have a blackjack, then the extra bet will be lost and you will continue playing with the main bet.
Insurance pays 2 to 1
This means that the extra bet is always equal to half your main bet. In case of winning an extra bet, you will lose the main bet but win an extra bet in the amount of the lost main bet, i.e. stay with a draw.
Push
Push is a draw, no one won or lost. You scored the same number of points with the dealer or you both had a blackjack.
Hand
Hand – a set of players or dealer cards. You can play with the dealer with one hand or can play in multi-hand blackjack.
Surrender
Surrender – with two cards (the first deal) you can give up if you think you have bad cards. Then half of the bet will be returned to you and the game on this hand will end.
Split
Split – if a player has 2 cards of the same value on his hand, the dealer offers the player a split – split this hand into 2 hands. If the player agrees, then 1 card from this hand passes to the other hand and the player makes the same bet on it, and the dealer gives out 1 more card for each of these hands and the game continues as usual.
Usually splitting aces is discussed separately in the rules – for example, after dividing the two aces into 2 hands, the dealer will give you 1 more card, and you cannot take more cards for these hands.
Double
Double. The player can double the existing bet and get only 1 card, after which the hand game is considered played.
Deal, Rebet , Undo, Clear All
Deal – the beginning of the game, Rebet – to play again, Undo – the cancellation of bets, Clear All – to remove all bets from all hands.
Game example
Let’s see how to play blackjack using the Classic Blackjack at CafeCasino as an example.
We start the game.
In the game you can read the rules of the original classic blackjack, which people play since the 19th century:
- Blackjack pays 3 to 2
- Insurance pays 2 to 1
- Dealer must hit soft 17
- Double any two cards. This means you can double your bet, but only on the condition that you have only 2 cards – after doubling, the dealer will give you 1 more card, and the hand will be considered played.
- 1 card dealt on split aces. If you make a split of aces, then they give you one more card for each hand, and after that, the hands are considered played.
- Split up to 3 hands. This means that if you have the opportunity to make a split, then you can split until you start playing 3 hands.
However, when you start the game you can play only 1 hand – the classic blackjack is not multi-hand blackjack.
As you can see from the rules, the game is played in 1 deck, which significantly increases the player’s chances of winning – here, it is easiest to collect blackjack. Let’s try it.
Make a bet and click on Deal – the game has begun. The croupier gave us 2 cards and took 2 cards to himself. From his cards, we see only 1.
Next, we need to decide whether it is worth taking another 1 card (then we click Hit) or what we scored is enough and want to see the result of the game. Then you need to click Stand – the dealer will open his second card and collect cards – in the end, he will either go over our total points (and win), or he will get more than 21 (and he will lose).
We decide to take another card, click Hit.
20 points. Let’s stop and see what the dealer has – click Stand:
The dealer also has 20. The game ends with Push.
Let’s look at the other endings of the game of classic blackjack.
Player Wins:
Dealer wins:
Player Blackjack:
Dealer Blackjack:
Possible blackjack at the dealer (card A), the ability to make an insurance bet:
Double – double the bet on the first hand, get a card and immediately see the result:
Surrender – we decide that we got bad cards and interrupt the game, returning half of our bet:
Split – if you have the same cards, you can split them with the same bets, continuing the game with the dealer with several hands (in the classic up to 3 hands):
Split aces – add 1 card per sleeve and go to the result:
Blackjack Types
Let’s see what variations of blackjack are presented in the online casino CafeCasino:
Blackjack
This is a standard multi-hand blackjack, the most popular among players. Here are its rules:
- Surrender any first two cards
- Split up to three hands
- Split aces receive only one card
- Double any two cards
- No re-splitting of aces
- A split ace and a ten-value card is not a Blackjack
- Decks used: 6 decks, reshuffled after each round
The main difference from the classic blackjack is that you can initially select the number of hands (up to 3), bet and play on them, while in the blackjack, the game is played from the start with only 1 hand.
In both blackjacks, you can split 1 hand to 3 hands.
Standard multi-hand blackjack can be played at any online casinos from our list.
Single Deck Blackjack
Almost the same as classic blackjack. The game takes place with one deck, which is reshuffled after each round, and only one hand is used. In the game you will only find the Double, Hit and Stand options, Surrender is inapplicable.

- Any other winning hand is paid 1 to 1
- Split up to two hands
- Split aces receive only one card
- After splitting, ace and ten-value card (or viceversa) is not a Blackjack

European Blackjack

An interesting blackjack option, the rules of the classic game are saved and some options are supplemented:
- Blackjack pays 3 to 2
- Insurance pays 2 to 1
- Dealer must stand on soft 17
- Double on hard totals of 9 to 11
- 1 card dealt on split aces
- Split up to 3 hands
Differences from the classic blackjack: 6 decks, 1 hand, no surrender, the dealer takes the second card after the players finish the set. Double only works if you have from 9 to 11:
Perfect Pairs
An extended version of blackjack, in which additional winnings are provided when collecting pair cards.

The rules of the game include the rules for winning bets on pairs:
- Perfect Pair pays 25:1.
- Colored Pair pays 12:1
- Mixed Pair pays 6:1
+ rules of standard blackjack.
Below we give examples of assembled pairs.
You can play in 2 hands, it is allowed to split and insurance from dealer blackjack is available. Bets on pairs are made separately – next to bets on blackjack hands:
- If you are dealt 2 identical cards (Perfect Pairs), then you get a win of 25 to 1 (for example, bet $5, win $125):
- If you are dealt 2 cards of the same denomination and color (Colored Pair), then you get a win of 12 to 1 (for example, bet $5, win $60):
- If you have been dealt 2 cards of the same face value, but of a different suit and different colors (Mixed Pair) – your win on pairs will be 6 to 1 (for example, bet $5 – win $30):
If there are no pairs, bets on pairs are lost in this round.
Zappit Blackjack
This is blackjack in which, in addition to the standard rules, there are several additions:

Rules:
- Blackjack pays 3 to 2
- Zapped blackjack pays 1 to 1
- Insurance pays 2 to 1
- Dealer will push on a total of 22 except blackjack
- Player can zap on 15, 16 and 17
- Dealer must hit soft 17
- Double any two cards
- 1 card dealt on split aces
- Split up to 3 hands
Game Features
At 15, 16, 17 – the player can make a zap – change cards if they are the same color:
As a result, we get 2 other cards in hand instead of those that we had.
If the dealer scores exactly 22, then he does not lose, and Push ends the game:
Live Dealer Blackjack
Playing blackjack can be much more interesting if you play it with a live dealer. The game takes place offline, and not using the RNG (random number generator in the program). The croupier streams the game using a webcam. In the live chat, you can chat with players or the dealer – he will answer with a voice. An absolutely equivalent replacement for a real casino game.
Select the section with live dealers on the online casino site, then select the table and the range of bets that you are going to play.

Why Play Blackjack?
- This is the only game in which the player possesses a slight advantage over the casino – The first dealer card is dealt face up.
- Relatively simple rules of the game – it is impossible to get confused and lose for this reason.
- You can play following a specific strategy, and not blindly hope for luck.
All this makes blackjack a game often more popular than roulette.
